About
A police consultant with a criminal record gets pulled into a brutal double homicide, and the case is the least compromising thing about him. Judgment matters more than logic here, and that goes for the investigation and everything happening at home.
The opening chapter sets up the murder case as a fully playable investigation, threaded with the kind of temptation and manipulation that a man with darker instincts probably shouldn't be trusted around. Work and home blur fast.
You split time between chasing leads on the case and the downtime around it: conversations, dates, and pressure from the people closest to you, including the ones you shouldn't be getting closer to. It's a short opening chapter, so don't expect the whole case cracked open by the end of it.
Changelog
- New
- New autosave setting in Options: On every Choice (the default), Every 15 Minutes, or Off. If picking choices has been causing hitches or freezes for you, try lowering the autosave amount.
- Autosaves are now off in Real Life Mode.
- In cases 1–3, pressing I now only highlights things you haven't looked at already, not everything. Doors and exits always light up.
- Chapter title cards for case chapters now show the case number.
- New "?" button on the flowchart that opens its tutorial.
- New Case 3 optional hint in the ? menu.
- Right-click in the journal now puts down the idea you're holding. Right-click again to close the journal.
- The journal tutorial and the ? menu now explain that it doesn't matter which idea you pick up first, and how to put one down.
- The tutorial now better explains what Prioritize does: when two case theories contradict, the prioritized one wins.
- Fixes
- Fixed an error where the mac version wouldn't start properly on Steam.
- Three achievements never unlocked on Steam: Wine o'Clock, Exit Strategy, and Title of Your Something Tape. They do now. If you already earned them in-game, they will unlock on Steam next time you launch.
- Case 1: Frank's letter is easier to click, and Victoria now always reminds you about it if you haven't read it.
- Case 1: The wine glass in Anne's kitchen no longer shows a short black screen first when clicked upon.
- Case 2: Laurel's head bruise has a bigger, brighter highlight.
- Case 2: Fixed certain dialogue lines to better fit the players solution.
- Case 3: the courthouse's main door button is now labelled "Main door", and the key rack in the security room no longer overlaps the exit.
- Case 3: the podium and corpse highlights are more clearly separated
- Case 3: Certain case theories can now be put down after you pick them up, which a bug previously prevented in specific scenarios.
- Remove all case theories no longer deletes theories the story gave you. It also no longer leaves you holding the theory it just deleted.
- The line through Morgan's heart emoji on the phone is gone.
- Checkpoints are now outlined in the in-game flowchart, not just the main-menu one.
- On the main menu flowchart, the marriage picker only offers marriage types the scene can actually happen in. (You can no longer do an open marriage scene and select exclusive for example.)
- The flowchart tutorial said Requirements was in the top left. It now correctly says top right.
- Extras spoiler warning: it now also appears when you open Extras from the end screen, just with a different message
- The Frank & Olivia Supporter Upgrade scene now has music. Its track was a file type the game couldn't play, so it was silent.
- A number of images and animation fixes and improvements
- 1.0.0.1
- Stability & saves
- Fixed a potential endless loop that could cause freezes and crashes for a small percentage of players. We've also added deeper freeze tracking to the game's logs so any future freeze is easier to trace.
- Fixed several save issues, including saves made at flowchart checkpoints loading in at the wrong spot and autosaves inheriting the names of manual saves.
- Detective mode & cases
- Added 100+ new combinations to detective mode, opening up more flexible routes to certain case theories.
- Fixed a bug in Case 3 where you could arrest a suspect before making a deduction about them, making it impossible to find all deductions.
- Fixed a bug where you couldn't revise your deduction about Finch's lawyer by revisiting him.
- Fixed a number of interrogation labels that showed the wrong response.
- Story & dialogue
- Fixed a bug where Morgan would text you as normal after a major relationship event.
- Fixed Anne's dialogue showing Andre's name.
- Made a number of small dialogue tweaks.
- New options
- Added a dialogue box opacity slider to the settings.
- Added Morgan as a filter option in Memories.
- Added a few smaller mid-scene paths to the flowchart's tracking.
- Changes
- Major scenes without dialogue can no longer be skipped by clicking, to keep their intended pace and prevent accidental skips.
- On a second playthrough, the phone now opens automatically during the prologue, since the "open the phone" tutorial no longer plays.
- Removed all ambience tracks (background chatter, birdsong and the like) along with the ambience volume slider. They were used too rarely to add to the game's atmosphere.
- Visuals & audio
- Fixed six animations that contained a black frame visible on every loop.
- Fixed a number of wrong or missing images.
- Fixed a number of music and sound bugs, including tracks stopping too early.
- Fixed the position and description of two achievements (Bad Cop and Coping).
- It's out. After 22 months of work, our dark character-driven detective drama AVN Murders & Mistresses is live on Patreon right now — the full game (not just one episode), two weeks before it hits Steam.
